Hey all!

This passed by a work related strategy list I=E2=80=99m on, and I'm pulling a=
n excerpt from it. I feel as technologists and engineers, we sometimes lose s=
ight of what real world thing we're helping others solve. This brings it int=
o clarity for me via a simple analogy.

=46rom Seth Godin=E2=80=99s This Is Marketing: You Can't Be Seen Until You L=
earn to See [1].

Harvard marketing professor Theodore Levitt famously said, =E2=80=9CPeople d=
on=E2=80=99t want to buy a quarter-inch drill bit. They want a quarter-inch h=
ole.=E2=80=9D=20

The lesson is that the drill bit is merely a feature, a means to an end, but=
 what people truly want is the hole it makes.

But that doesn=E2=80=99t go nearly far enough. No one wants a hole.

What people want is the shelf that will go on the wall once they drill the h=
ole.

Actually, what they want is how they=E2=80=99ll feel once they see how unclu=
ttered everything is, when they put their stuff on the shelf that went on th=
e wall now that there=E2=80=99s a quarter-inch hole.
