Questions re: Site Reliability Engineering

Greetings, everyone. Long time no see!

I had a call Friday with a recruiter for a tech company here in Seattle for
an SRE (Site Reliability Engineer) position, and wanted to know...

Anyone here could give me some suggestions and pointers for someone trying
to branch out to SRE from SA (system administrator) work? Is there anything
I could do to improve my employability for this position?

To help, the position unfortunately is for a mostly Windows shop, however I
hope to advocate for Linux in the back-office. Even if it means running MS
SQL Server on Linux. :)

I have experience working with almost every version of Windows Server since
NT 4.0. Maybe I can advocate for a MacBook Pro if I luck out and they hire
me.

Thanks for the help, everyone. Greetings from Seattle!

=============================================================== From: John Dills ------------------------------------------------------ This is gonna sound dumb - have you read the Google book on SRE? I think its a great intro. I don't do SRE work but we have a SRE team at my current company. I could see what they think! On Sun, Sep 30, 2018 at 2:53 PM Alex Smith (K4RNT) wrote: g ng ey all

=============================================================== From: "Alex Smith (K4RNT)" ------------------------------------------------------ I wasn't aware of this book from Google. I didn't think that O'Reilly would do a book on a specific role. I know it's a simple RTFM, but thanks for the referral! :) " 'With the first link, the chain is forged. =============================================================== From: Christopher Rimondi ------------------------------------------------------ I'd also recommend the SRE book. The original one came out in 2016, there was a follow up earlier this year which is more focused on practical implementation of those principles. A lot of companies have adopted the role of SRE as a parallel to Software Engineering (SWE). I really like both of those books. However, they are a classic example of YMMV. You will find it interesting to discover what is possible at really mature engineering shops like Google vs what is practical for medium tier engineering shops.
