One of the best videos about makerspaces

From: Phil Shapiro
------------------------------------------------------
This newly posted TEDx video is one of the most convincing demonstrations about the value of makerspaces.

Please share within any youth or adults you know who are new to the idea of makerspaces. And then take a moment to explain how open source is deeply ingrained in the maker movement.

Funding idea for Chatt*Lab

From: Phil Shapiro
------------------------------------------------------

Makerspace are about ingenuity, so it would be sure interesting to use that ingenuity to help in funding the space.

For example, check out this nice dog pet bed made from an older television cabinet.

(scroll down)

This kind of thing could sell for $75 or more. True, it takes some real labor to remove and dispose of
the television guts -- not to mention picking up the cabinets from donors.

Just wanted to share the idea, though. This kind of thing makes for an easy newspaper
article topic -- and the newspaper article exposure could boost the makerspace, too.

btw, there's a neat open source subtheme to these kinds of conversions. People might
ask, "What else can I convert to new uses?" -- and the obvious answer is -- Windows and Intel Mac computers to Linux.

Another switcher from Windows to Linux

From: Phil Shapiro
------------------------------------------------------
A longtime Windows geek friend of mine told me this morning that his middle school son's three year old Windows laptop was acting sluggish and the son was begging his dad for a new laptop. Dad, wanting to foster independence with his son, said, "Why don't you try installing Ubuntu Linux and see if that makes your laptop more responsive."

The kid (a middle school student) installed Ubuntu Linux on his own and now loves his laptop. Dad was going to help him dual-boot Windows and Linux, but the kid said he'd prefer to install Linux only on the laptop.

Now the two younger siblings in the family are begging to install Linux on their laptops. The middle school son has created bootable USB drives for his young siblings for now. It's only a matter of time before the young one's say: "No more bootable USB drives for me."

Anyway, just wanted to share this story. I just wasn't expecting to hear such a story from my friend. My response? Your kids will now have something in common with the smartest tech geeks at their school - who invariably use Linux. They'll also be well equipped to dive head first into the maker movement at any makerspace. My friend's response to me: "You're right."

Slashdot video interview with me

From: Phil Shapiro
------------------------------------------------------
The Slashdot web site got interested in my blog post last week about the possibility of converting 50 closed Chicago schools into 50 makerspaces. They did a video interview with me via Google Hangouts. The video ought to be coming out in a day or two on the Slashdot web site. I'll share the link when it's out.

Meanwhile, kindly visit the original blog post at http://tinyurl.com/k5yuyhu once a day for the next few days. If MAKE magazine can say that this blog post garnered a lot of views, that helps propel the ideas in the blog post forward.

Along similar lines, do make it a habit to visit opensource.com at least once a day. The folks running this web site are keeping careful traffic of web traffic. Their goal is to keep expanding the scope and reach of the web site so that it becomes and more and more common Internet destination. I find I'm constantly learning interesting new open source stuff on that web site. And please do register on the web site. That allows you to post supportive and informative comments on the blog posts.

Can 50 closed Chicago schools become 50 makerspaces?

Chugaluggers,

Here's a blog post I wrote for MAKE magazine this morning .

If the ideas in this blog post resonate, please talk about this
with friends and family. If the conversation enlarges wide enough,
some forward motion might potentially take place.

Room reservation system for Chatt*Lab

From: Phil Shapiro
------------------------------------------------------

As Chatt*Lab grows, it might have a need for a room reservation system. This open source tool looks excellent.

http://www.bsu.edu/libraries/getopenroom/

Come to think of it, being familiar with such a free tool can help Chatt*Lab leaders explain future growth plans. "We plan to use an open source room reservation system so that all 45 rooms of our makerspace get the most possible use."
