Ubuntu on MacBook Pro

From: Eric Wolf
Anyone have experience with Ubuntu 12.04 on a 17" MacBook Pro? It's a
fairly recent machine with a Thunderbolt port. I don't need the Thunderbolt
port to work except for mini DV.

=============================================================== From: William Wade ------------------------------------------------------ I am dual booting with 12.10 on my MBP. I suggest using 12.10 if at all possible as it fixes a stack of issues. I have not trie to use my Thunderbolt/miniDV port yet, so no help there. There are various battery issues with Linux on MBPs. It has gotten a lot better. One tip I have yet to see elsewhere is that you want to go into your audio settings and disable the HDMI audio. That will help a lot, but the audio is still the biggest bug out there sucking up your battery (next in line is the wifi). Some have had success with muting the mic when not in use. Wil

Fortunately, this machine will rarely have to go without power. I may set up dual boot. Are you using Bootcamp or LILO? -Eric -=--=---=----=----=---=--=-=--=---=----=---=--=-=- Eric B. Fedora has been working on a non-bootcamp method, but it is not ready yet. This one is a bit old, but it is a good starting place: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation

=============================================================== From: Eric Wolf ------------------------------------------------------ Crazy! I just took the SSD out of my old Toshiba laptop and put it in the MacBook. I booted rEFIt expecting to partition the drive but it booted all the way to the desktop! Wifi and Bluetooth worked out of the box. Gotta love that modular Linux kernel! I do want to reinstall to 64-bit so I'll be doing that later. -Eric -=--=---=----=----=---=--=-=--=---=----=---=--=-=- Eric B. Wolf 720-334-7734
