when did newegg.com....

From: Ed King

....start selling other stuff besides electronics?

I built my last two home computers from newegg components and I never noticed
they sold stuff like... carburetors...

too bad the price is outrageous.... I'd carve a carburetor out of wood before
I paid $650 for one

=============================================================== From: Randy Yates ------------------------------------------------------ My personal opinion is that they are branching out to compete with Amazon more. Amazon has better deals on computer parts these days. A lot of sites have changed their business plan because of Amazon. eBay changed their model and I think it hurt them. I still give Newegg a lot of my business, but I find myself using Amazon more and more.

=============================================================== From: Ryan Harrell ------------------------------------------------------ I still like the service and speed of NewEgg better than Amazon. And if you get their newsletters with the discounts they often have better prices as long as you're willing to wait till what you want is on sale. Amazon is still hit or miss for me. --- Ryan Harrell 423-313-6405 www.ryanfreelance.com

=============================================================== From: Chad Smith ------------------------------------------------------ I've noticed a lot of once computer-only or computer-and-electronics-only sites have "branched out". One of my favorite cheap-Asian-knockoff websites that used to be all about crappy hand-held gaming emulators and iFonies is selling women's clothing now. Not like the domain name got taken over or anything - they just added evening wear to the inventory. Very strange. *- Chad W. Smith* *"I like a man who's middle name is W."* President George W. =============================================================== From: Lynn Dixon ------------------------------------------------------ It's hard to beat Amazon Prime. I love the fact that I can pay $3.99 and have my items shipped overnight. Heck, you get 2 day delivery for free if you are a Prime member as well. Newegg has nothing that compares to that, despite their fast service times.

=============================================================== From: Dave Brockman ------------------------------------------------------ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Free Shipping/Reduced Shipping is offered all the time on NewEgg items. Plus paying for normal delivery results in next day or two day delivery depending on which warehouse stock is shipped from. And with Newegg, you only deal with one vendor. I do use Amazon increasingly more and more, but it is not replacing my Newegg purchases for the most part. =============================================================== From: Lynn Dixon ------------------------------------------------------ Another thing to keep in mind: With Newegg you have to pay TN sales tax. With Amazon I don't. For me, Amazon has almost entirely replaced my Newegg purchases. I still comparison shop between them both, but it seems I always come out better when I order through Amazon using Prime.

=============================================================== From: Eric Wolf ------------------------------------------------------ I got a free year of ShopRunner which gives me free 2-day shipping from NewEgg (and elsewhere). NewEgg has better search filters than Amazon and I trust tech reviews more on NewEgg. I often use NewEgg to identify what I want but buy from Amazon for price reasons. Occaionally, I'll trek down to MicroCenter to buy off the shelf. Sometimes MicroCenter is cheaper than Amazon and NewEgg. On Apr 13, 2012 8:58 AM, "Lynn Dixon" wrote:

=============================================================== From: Ryan Harrell ------------------------------------------------------ I agree Dave, almost everything I buy from newegg I get the next day. Usually shipping is free or only a couple of bucks. I just trust newegg. I've never had a bad experience with them. Returns are super easy and they've never given me any problems with RMAs or replacments. --- Ryan Harrell 423-313-6405 www.ryanfreelance.com

=============================================================== From: Aaron welch ------------------------------------------------------ I have literally gotten things I ordered at 4AM the same day using Amazon Prime. Was crazy when it all showed up a few hours after I woke up. -AW

=============================================================== From: Lynn Dixon ------------------------------------------------------ Oh yeah... this is worth mentioning.... Microcenter will price match any Newegg price if you print it out and bring it in with you!!!! But, I do use Newegg to research, but I end up buying at Amazon since it usually comes out cheaper on me,

=============================================================== From: Chad Smith ------------------------------------------------------ I love MicroCenter. We have one in St Louis, so it's very convenient for me. I often do find the price is cheaper to go pick it up myself, especially when there's no shipping and you can have it immediately. MicroCenter is a brick and mortar that I believe will not just survive, but thrive in this online era. Despite being 33 years old - it acts like a well-funded start-up, IMHO. And that's a good thing. *- Chad W. Smith* *"I like a man who's middle name is W."* President George W. Bush - February 10, 2003 bit.ly/gwb-dubya

=============================================================== From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ Quoting Dave Brockman : +1000. Spend more than about $30 on NewEgg and you get free standard shipping, which, as Dave points out, typically results in at most 2nd day delivery.

=============================================================== From: John Aldrich ------------------------------------------------------ My problem with Amazon lately has been they tend to use the Fed-Ex service which gets handed off to the USPS and somewhere in there, things tend to get misplaced, sometimes for weeks at a time. I want either Fed-Ex all the way or USPS all the way. Not some hacked-up hybrid that doesn't work. unfortunately that's NOT an option sometimes with Amazon. :(

=============================================================== From: William Wade ------------------------------------------------------ I have had Prime for a while now through Amazon Mom and that Prime is free for a while. It is quite addicting and I believe I will likely start paying for it once my Prime benefits run out. (Then we get the TV and movies as well, those are not included in the free Prime versions). And I don't want to start a long discussion, but this statement is likely to start one: you still "have" to pay sales tax either way. I can point you to the TN form if you wish...

=============================================================== From: Aaron Welch ------------------------------------------------------ Not called "sales" tax, it is the "use" part. =============================================================== From: Dave Brockman ------------------------------------------------------ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Actually, last I heard, Amazon was pushing *for* sales tax, provided it applied to everyone... oh wait, how did they put it.... Amazon supports "an even-handed federal framework for state sales tax collection". And they are losing state by state slowly over time. CA collects next year I think? Indiana collects in 2014. =============================================================== From: Ryan Harrell ------------------------------------------------------ Also now that amazon has a warehouse operating in TN they are being required to start charging sales tax. I'm not sure when that will start, but I know the legislation passed after some back and forth earlier this year. I would imagine it will probably start next fiscal year. --- Ryan Harrell 423-313-6405 www.ryanfreelance.com

=============================================================== From: William Wade ------------------------------------------------------ I always thought it would be nice if it was a sales tax instead of a use tax. Tax on location purchased/shipped from instead of where it is going to be used/consumed. Afterall if you buy a drink in GA and drive back to TN, do you have to measure the amount left in order to know the real amount in use tax to pay? A side benefit to taxing on where it is sold is that states would then have initiative to even out use/sales tax as they competed for warehouses and such.

=============================================================== From: Ed King ------------------------------------------------------ saw on newschannel9 last night... several folks have receieved letters from amazon about taxes due (amazon doesn't collect the tax, they give you a link that you need to go to) TN residents who ordered stuff from amazon last year will probably get a notice. newschannel9 said they tried to contact TN Dept of Revenue but their interview was declined.
