heck yes its possible I do it all the time ;-)

look for floppy-based distro list on distrowatch.   if the box has a harddrive maybe install zipslack (boot linux from DOS, woohoo).    

there's also ELKS if you are demented enough.   I had it running on a Tandy 1000 TL/2

I have to boot this OLD (running DOS!) box in Linux, no CDROM and no 
ambitions to change the hardware other than to install an ISA networks card 
(yes, ISA, I still have some of those...  :) )
