Hmmm... learn something new every day:

Excel is considered one of the exceptions to the standard for -5^2. Oddly,
I would have computed that the same way as Excel. However, if I saw -a^2, I
would compute it the same as -(a^2) because the negative sign would be
meaningless otherwise.

But what about -a^3? It's the same regardless of how you handle the sign.
(-a) * (-a) * (-a) = -(a*a*a)
