You are mis-remembering.  It is possible to push 10Mb and 100Mb over
two pairs.  Your cabling is out of spec and you deserve every packet
you lose in this scenario.  Your CAT-5E cable run isn't really CAT-5E
if you don't terminate all 8 wires on each end.  As much as I hate[d]
thin-net, it made damn sure your terminations were correct or it
wouldn't pass traffic.
