You can backup an iphone, reset it, and then restore it.  I'm sure you
can something similar to a Droid.  You just need it to connect to the
carrier to function, your preferences/apps/data can come later.

You shouldn't be carrying sensitive data around on your laptop anyway.
The laptop should have the applications and VPN client you need to
access the data.
