Interestingly enough, I interviewed there 20+ years ago when they were just
getting started on the car monitoring systems. At the time, each axle had
a sensor that transmitted temperature information to a box on the crossing
switch posts as the train went past. They could detect overheating
bearings and call ahead to the next stop to have them pull the car and move
its goods to a new one while the train was stopped. This was all to
prevent an axle from seizing up and causing a derailment.
Who knows how much more advanced the system is now?
Jeff.
