If you are using the native MySQL/MySQLi functions, it would probably
cost you very little in pain to move to PDO.  You will most likely
(I've seen your code...) have to use differing db specific code in
some cases, as it's not a true/total abstraction layer.  But it does
give connectivity and retrieval abstraction.
