I don't really know what you mean by setting it as a media device or a camera. I just plugged it in and expected it to show up in Nautilus the same way it shows up in Windows Explorer. I have also googled the problem and from what I've read it doesn't show up in /dev either.

No most androids are going to the MTP protocol. My galaxy tab 10.1 shows up fine on rhel and Fedora when I install libmtp packages
