As others have pointed out, if you bounce around on *nix boxes very
much, knowing enough vi(m) to make quick edits is pretty much a
necessity.  The one thing 95% of the boxes I have touched over the
years had in common was simply the fact that a vi variation was
available.  20 year old AT&T, NCR, Sco, Solaris UNIX all the way to
the latest BSD or Linux variation you download today.  I realize there
are probably a handful now that don't install it by default, but I
suspect a strong 90% still have some flavor installed.  And you really
don't have to know much to save your bacon....
