[Chugalug] Postfix authetication

I installed postfix on xubuntu using apt-get install. Next, I configured
postfix to use SASL authentication by adding the following lines to
/etc/postfix/main.cf:

smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtpd_sasl_security_options = noanonymous
smtpd_sasl_local_domain = localhost
broken_sasl_auth_clients = yes

Next, I added a user using sudo adduser smtp and set a password. Finally, I
connected to the server using telnet and issued the command AUTH PLAIN
<base64 of 'smtp\0smtp\0password'> and I get an authentication failure. Any
thoughts on why the authentication is failing?
